Homesick for Syria

More than two years and I’m still fighting with this life that is new to me,

I don’t know what kind of destiny brought me here,

It’s war and revolution,

Displacement and migration,

A language only understood by those who’ve experienced every detail of it,

Is there more pain than that in which we live?

Is there a worse sickness than the disease of nostalgia for everything we have lost?

Here the stones are deaf and can’t talk,

Here, where the feelings are made by machines,

Here, where every smile has a price,

Here, the streets, people’s faces and everything around me seems hard and cold.

In this world where the trees don’t sing and the streets have no lips to speak,

Everyone seems to be working with the machine in this fantastic concrete, industrial civilisation,

But what’s the point of civilization without feelings or emotions?

I remember the doors of Damascus,

Where every stone tells the story of love,

Where the jasmine tells the story of war,

Where between our roads and walls are our friends,

Where the taste of my mother’s coffee blends together with Fairuz mornings,

Where the street vendors bustle around the city,

Nothing in this new atmosphere feels like love,

Nothing.
